Tips on accurately measuring snowfall:
Pick an area that is away from building and trees.
Try to measure the snow in several places away from large drifts and take the average.
You can prepare by clearing off a flat surface such as a picnic table or even use a snow board (flat board that is approximate 60 cm x 60 cm or 2 ft by 2 ft). You can measure directly on the ground but avoid areas that may give inaccurate results (e.g. gravel driveway, long grass).
Measure the snow depth using a meterstick, yardstick, tape measure or ruler by pushing the measuring device into the snow until it reaches the flat surface or ground. Try to keep it perpendicular to the flat surface.
You can either measure a total amount or clear off your flat surface in between measurements. If you are using a snow board just clear it off and place it on the newly fallen snow. Be sure to keep track of the times and amounts so you can add them up to get a total snowfall amount.
If possible, include a picture of a ruler in the snow so we can easily verify the report.
