Strong Winter Storm on Sunday
It’s shaping up to be a Storm Chip kind of weekend. A developing storm will bring a mix of heavy snow, ice pellets and extended periods of freezing rain, to New Brunswick on Sunday.
Saturday: Temperatures are expected to be above freezing. Rain will spread through the province, changing over to freezing rain, ice pellets or snow as the temps drop overnight, to or below the freezing mark.
Sunday: This is where the fun begins…. As temps drop, the rain will change over to a mix of snow, ice pellets or freezing rain.
The Northern half of the province should see mostly snow, and a lot of it. Current models indicate 15 to 30cm of snow is likely. It’s entirely possible for some areas to see accumulations nearing 60cm.
Central & southeastern NB is in for a mixed bag of precipitation. There could be up to 10cm of ice pellets in areas, while other areas could see a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain, creating a real mess. Freezing rain will reduce the amount of accumulated ice pellets
The Southwestern portion of the province is likely to see an extended period of freezing rain. There could be up to 12mm of accretion.
Winds will be 10 to 20km/h, gusting at times to 50km/h. The system should be out of the province by late afternoon or evening. Temps will drop to -5 to -10*c.
In the northern areas receiving the snow, visibility will be diminished by blowing and drifting. Please be extra careful when driving anywhere in the province, as the roads will be quite slippery.
If you don’t have your storm chips yet, go pick some up. It’s a storm chip kind of weekend.
As always, be safe and let us know what you’re experiencing.
